Multimedia Mise-en-scene Project

Mise-en-scene Project

Character & activity goals

For my Multimedia Mise-en-scene project, our activity goals were to develop a presentation on a character our teacher had assigned us. Which included us giving our character a physical representation, appearance, costuming, makeup, a setting like their most used space, and then an audio for them such as music or stings. Me and my groups character was a boy names Jonathan Jacobson. Jonathan is a 32 year old man with green eyes, black hair, right handed, white, wears Ray Bans, always has a strong smell of cologne. He is a single bank employee who throws parties often with family and friends, he also has a white golden doodle named max. His setting takes place in Central Park New York, upper west side and in a dog park for his dog Max. His audio consists of specific songs of Tame Impala, Queen, Hall & Oates, Bruno Mars, Billy Joel, Pink Floyd, and Booker T. and  the M.G's. Also, dog barking, bill counter, motivational podcasts with Joe Rogan and treadmill sounds since he is a healthy, consistent man at the gym. For tactile representations we had cologne, air pods, "The Bear," "Suits," "The Office," cash, hair gel, and fancy pens. His colors are grey, navy, dark green, and cream.

Organization of creation & elements

Me and my partners ended up creating all his details during our first two classes on a word document once we were assigned his project. We wanted to make people imagine Jonathan just how we did after us discussing upon ourselves on the type of person we should make. So on the day of representation we did this by one of us printing out laminated bank statements, glow stick bracelets to represent the parties he enjoys hosting often, an album vinyl cover for Hall & Oats, his mood boards, a Valentino cologne, and fake money.

As for Max, we decided it would be a good idea to find a Youtube video of a man walking around central park with his dog. As if it were to be a point of view video from Jonathan. We also created a Quizzes for people to play so they could understand our character more off of other physical representation we brought. I think that was a really good idea because people seemed to have fun since it was interactive as well. Two of my partners ended up creating a playlist on Spotify that had the type of music Jonathan would listen too. We had set it up on one of our partners computer with headphones attached so people who came to our station could listen to it. When we were setting up our station we ended put two computers in the back and two in the front. The ones in the back had a Youtube video playing the man walking in Central Park with his dog and the other one had a picture of a bank. Towards the front of our station we had two more computers, one with the quiz for people to play once they got there and the other one had the Spotify playlist for people to listen to. Other than the computer and headphones, we placed the Hall & Oates vinyl on top of the two back computers but in a position where they didn't cover the screens. We had then placed the bank statements nicely around the bottom right hand corner of our desks with the glow sick bracelets scattered around
our desks to kind to fill up the space. We had also placed our partner, Guillermo's cologne right next to his computer. On a small index card we had wrote on it to not spray the cologne as it is expensive and Guillermo was nice enough to bring it to class with us. We also wrote on the index card it for them to listen to the music and to play and reset the quiz so the next people could play the quiz after.

Analysis & reflection

For Jonathan, me and my group wanted to create a guy that wasn't super boring since he was already somewhat boring since he was a bank employee so we wanted to try and make his life a little more interesting. At first when we were still brainstorming the bigger factors of his life, we had come up with the idea of him being a frat alumni that had a fraternity ring and was always surrounded with girl. Especially since in the description our teacher had originally gave us he would throw a lot parties often and it kind of just clicked for us. Before finalizing the type of person we had made Jonathan, we had wanted to make him a frat alumni but then we ended up getting carried away and had made his whole personality about the frat. I still think it was a good idea but maybe it was best we ended up taking a different route for Jonathan. I wanted to make him a little more fun of a person instead of keeping his life so simple and a typical guy that lives in New York, I wanted to put him on Tinder at least considering the fact he is single and is a bank employee. Obviously, my group said no...I do think it was for the better so I am not angry or anything. It did not take us long to come up with the basics of Jonathan since he sounded kind of straightforward based off the given description. He kind of already sounded like an average joe so we tried our best trying to make him a little more interesting by making his music taste enjoyable.

I think me and my group did a good job at bring able to collectively participate in our project together. It made me happy that all of us knew what was going on, we were all on very similar pages, there weren't any misunderstandings or arguments and we were able to have fun too. It was pretty satisfying hearing positive things about our station as the group we ended up creating was very unexpected. It still made me happy I was able to work with creative and funny people, I was able to learn and laugh which is something I love doing because it makes me have a super enjoyable experience whilst doing something. I learned so much during this project and the project itself was so much fun I loved being able to create someone that did not exist and being able to get creative with my friends about the whole thing. I do think there were some things we could have fixed such as making the description we made of Jonathan. Many groups had just straight up gave the description instead of having somewhat assume or figure out what it is. I did hear someone complaining that basically there was not a long paragraph just straight up giving everything away, if anything I think me and my group should have added more detailed questions to the quiz but other than that, I do think we made a good project overall!
