Multimedia Mise-en-scene Project

Mise-en-scene Project

Character & activity goals

For my Multimedia Mise-en-scene project, our activity goals were to develop a presentation on a character our teacher had assigned us. Which included us giving our character a physical representation, appearance, costuming, makeup, a setting like their most used space, and then an audio for them such as music or stings. Me and my groups character was a boy names Jonathan Jacobson. Jonathan is a 32 year old man with green eyes, black hair, right handed, white, wears Ray Bans, always has a strong smell of cologne. He is a single bank employee who throws parties often with family and friends, he also has a white golden doodle named max. His setting takes place in Central Park New York, upper west side and in a dog park for his dog Max. His audio consists of specific songs of Tame Impala, Queen, Hall & Oates, Bruno Mars, Billy Joel, Pink Floyd, and Booker T. and  the M.G's. Also, dog barking, bill counter, motivational podcasts with Joe Rogan and treadmill sounds since he is a healthy, consistent man at the gym. For tactile representations we had cologne, air pods, "The Bear," "Suits," "The Office," cash, hair gel, and fancy pens. His colors are grey, navy, dark green, and cream.

Organization of creation & elements

Me and my partners ended up creating all his details during our first two classes on a word document once we were assigned his project. We wanted to make people imagine Jonathan just how we did after us discussing upon ourselves on the type of person we should make. So on the day of representation we did this by one of us printing out laminated bank statements, glow stick bracelets to represent the parties he enjoys hosting often, an album vinyl cover for Hall & Oats, his mood boards, a Valentino cologne, and fake money.

As for Max, we decided it would be a good idea to find a Youtube video of a man walking around central park with his dog. As if it were to be a point of view video from Jonathan. We also created a Quizzes for people to play so they could understand our character more off of other physical representation we brought. I think that was a really good idea because people seemed to have fun since it was interactive as well. Two of my partners ended up creating a playlist on Spotify that had the type of music Jonathan would listen too. We had set it up on one of our partners computer with headphones attached so people who came to our station could listen to it. When we were setting up our station we ended put two computers in the back and two in the front. The ones in the back had a Youtube video playing the man walking in Central Park with his dog and the other one had a picture of a bank. Towards the front of our station we had two more computers, one with the quiz for people to play once they got there and the other one had the Spotify playlist for people to listen to. Other than the computer and headphones, we placed the Hall & Oates vinyl on top of the two back computers but in a position where they didn't cover the screens. We had then placed the bank statements nicely around the bottom right hand corner of our desks with the glow sick bracelets scattered around
our desks to kind to fill up the space. We had also placed our partner, Guillermo's cologne right next to his computer. On a small index card we had wrote on it to not spray the cologne as it is expensive and Guillermo was nice enough to bring it to class with us. We also wrote on the index card it for them to listen to the music and to play and reset the quiz so the next people could play the quiz after.

Analysis & reflection

For Jonathan, me and my group wanted to create a guy that wasn't super boring since he was already somewhat boring since he was a bank employee so we wanted to try and make his life a little more interesting. At first when we were still brainstorming the bigger factors of his life, we had come up with the idea of him being a frat alumni that had a fraternity ring and was always surrounded with girl. Especially since in the description our teacher had originally gave us he would throw a lot parties often and it kind of just clicked for us. Before finalizing the type of person we had made Jonathan, we had wanted to make him a frat alumni but then we ended up getting carried away and had made his whole personality about the frat. I still think it was a good idea but maybe it was best we ended up taking a different route for Jonathan. I wanted to make him a little more fun of a person instead of keeping his life so simple and a typical guy that lives in New York, I wanted to put him on Tinder at least considering the fact he is single and is a bank employee. Obviously, my group said no...I do think it was for the better so I am not angry or anything. It did not take us long to come up with the basics of Jonathan since he sounded kind of straightforward based off the given description. He kind of already sounded like an average joe so we tried our best trying to make him a little more interesting by making his music taste enjoyable.

I think me and my group did a good job at bring able to collectively participate in our project together. It made me happy that all of us knew what was going on, we were all on very similar pages, there weren't any misunderstandings or arguments and we were able to have fun too. It was pretty satisfying hearing positive things about our station as the group we ended up creating was very unexpected. It still made me happy I was able to work with creative and funny people, I was able to learn and laugh which is something I love doing because it makes me have a super enjoyable experience whilst doing something. I learned so much during this project and the project itself was so much fun I loved being able to create someone that did not exist and being able to get creative with my friends about the whole thing. I do think there were some things we could have fixed such as making the description we made of Jonathan. Many groups had just straight up gave the description instead of having somewhat assume or figure out what it is. I did hear someone complaining that basically there was not a long paragraph just straight up giving everything away, if anything I think me and my group should have added more detailed questions to the quiz but other than that, I do think we made a good project overall!

Romantic Comedy Genre Research

 Romantic Comedy

Romantic comedies are normally portrayed through different posters or viewings at theaters. This genre is made for romance lovers and comedy lovers conjoin and see the ups and downs and funny parts of how romantic stories could flow with one another. This is shown through cute dates, attractive actors, beautiful scenery, etc.

The production technique of romantic comedies include very similar storylines. For example, two characters meet throughout another person, they are not supposed to find an interest in each other which leads them to go on dates, they find out something they do not like about one another and try to leave only to realize they need one another and finalize to them falling in love all over again. This also involves other situations or people who add tension to the love bond in between the two characters.

Romantic comedies are typically marketed to their target audience which are normally 13-32 year old women. As there are women's who show these types of movies to their parents or significant other and also use this genre for "girl's night" so they all could fangirl over the film together. There are always posters with they two characters slightly touching each other or not touching each other at all. Many producers do this to add tension and curiosity to what might happen in the film. Posters or magazines of romantic comedies normally include colors that could be considered cute; such as light pink, baby blue, beige or a pastel yellow.

"10 Things I Hate About You" is one of the most watched romcoms. Not only does it  involve two attractive main characters (Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger), but a sweet message on how to not judge a book by its cover. Kat Stratford is a bold, seen as rude, serious, straightforward, smart, athletic girl who seems to have no interest in boys as her sister Bianca, is the complete opposite. This only leads to a group of boys placing a bet Patrick Verona, the schools bully, tough-guy would not be able to make Kat fall in love with him. At the end of the film the two characters end up falling in love with each other regardless of the bet. They both realize the love, humor, and care they have for each other. Throughout the film, there is a paintball date people to this day dress up as for Halloween, low-rise jeans with cute small tops that flatter Julia Stile's body type. As for Heath Ledger, dark, cigarettes' and attractive aura flows with him as the film goes on. Furthermore, there are so many details showing the true love between these two because of the amount of detail they both notice about each other. The film has numerous songs, such as "Can't Take my Eyes Off You" Patrick sang to Kat on the football stands during her soccer practice.

"How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" is a romcom starring Matthew McCaughey and Kate Hudson. This film, such as many other romantic comedies, involves accidental emotions towards two characters of them falling in love. In this film, two characters were going behind each others back, after they both chose one another without the other person knowing, only testing each other on how to lose a guy in 10 days and how to make a girl fall in love with him in 10 days. These two characters end up making bets or simply blogging about their experiences on each others stories without one another knowing. They go on so many events as one is trying make the other lose feelings and the other is trying to make sure the other persons feelings stay. The girl attempts to annoy him by asking to go buy her a drink or a snack during the middle of a baseball game as the man is a heavily based baseball fan. The man has no other choice but to get her the drink or snack to ensure he is not going to lose her. This film prioritizes the two characters get cute, romantic scenes with one another to try and make sure the viewer realizes before the characters in the movie that they have potential of being a cute couple.

Blog Posting - Sound

 Sound Project - Learning summary

Throughout the duration of my sound projects, I ended up learning numerous things about films and the way different factors contribute, especially to the process and result of a product. I learned how many takes it might take for or to actually get something they think fits to the scene. For one of my sound projects I needed to create a Foley sound of champagne sizzling, I ended up buying coke for this sound. I opened it and got a good sizzle but it yet did not feel like it fit the sound or stood out to me like it was supposed to. I had to move locations from my bedroom floor because I realized it was not the smartest place to be opening a sugary drink like that in my room but I ended up moving to my bathroom, shook up the coke and opened it. Only to end up getting a sound I ended up using for my project after several takes. I think creating Foley sounds are pretty tricky but once you get a hang of it they are easier to create. I learned how still and precise Foley sound makers had to be, how much layering, and how duplicating and cutting of sounds works and turns out. Finding sounds was also pretty annoying but still really fun to see how and what people would use to make Foley sounds for different types of sounds.

Directions for sound projects

For the sound projects we had to brainstorm ideas for both but mainly for the very first one; since, we had to fully create a small story with a new partner, make it a 1-2 minutes scene, and nothing else to piggyback off of. If we wanted to use words, the limit was 7 words but me and my partner used minimal words. On the other hand, for the second sound project we were able to work with the same person we worked on the One Word Film project and just add sounds to that. It was so much fun being able to look for sounds and edit, cut, and adjust them to something I did not think we were gonna be able to use again. I think it was cool how when we were filming the One Word Film project, we did not even think about what sounds would go with it at the time, only to later end up adding sounds for it.

Approach to projects

When we were first introduced to sound project #1 and #2 I was excited to see what I was able to storm up when adding and adjusting the sounds to my previous film. I had already started to create ideas for specific scenes and secondary sounds throughout the film. Such as wind flowing, rain drops, thunder, birds chirping, since it would add to the environment, area, and understanding of my film. It's like I started visioning everything in my head immediately and I would tell my partner, and when I started working on the projects I already knew what to look for or create if it was a Foley sound.

During brainstorming I made sure to share every detail of what I was thinking about with my partner to make sure we were on similar pages, and made sure they shared their thoughts with me. I think for the second project I ended up creating a new friendship and someone who I worked well with because me and my partner would really like each others ideas towards the brainstorming planning sheets and also appreciated and used each others opinions towards specific things we would both do in the project. Me and my partners for both projects would write down the things we both agreed on, and would plan the following paces.

Our outline was really helpful as it acted like a guide towards the next steps to the project. Especially since me and my partners ideas were on it I kind of knew what to do, was sure of most things, and kind of understood their point of views and opinions of things for our projects. I still obviously got their opinions before doing certain actions towards our project, but it was still nice knowing I understood someone a bit more about their views on things. If I had a question about where to go, how to do something and vise versa, my partner would be very reassuring that I understood how and where to do it. I used Clipchamp to edit my second project and iMovie for my first project.

Analyzing & Link

I think something I could have done better with my first project was to reassure my partner he could tell me more thoroughly of the actions he wanted to take further with the project, due to us not doing so, we had little hiccups of misunderstanding as the project went on. Also, to make sure both had equally divided the work and to make sure what we were doing was ok with one another on both sides. For my second project, I think me and my partner did a good job at understanding each others approach towards the project, as we both would reassure each other and make sure to get each others green light when doing something different with the project. It truly did feel as if I was actually getting far and learning more during the second project but I am happy with how both of them turned out.
